Florida's Children First

Florida’s Children First is a 501 C3 nonprofit children’s advocacy organization dedicated to helping Florida’s at risk children and youth. We rely on the generous support of individuals, corporations and private foundations. Donations of volunteer, professional services, pro-bono time, and money help continue the work of FCF as we fight to remain a diligent watchdog for our most vulnerable children.

Please help us continue advocating and protecting the rights of children across the state.

Key Areas of Need

  • 20,000 children in out of home care in Florida’s child welfare system.
  • 7,000 children are under protective supervision.
  • Many of these 27,000 children languish in state care for many years.
  • A growing population of youth who age out of the foster care system do not have the necessary skills or education to successfully live as independent adults.

The Florida Bar Foundation and Florida’s Children First seek to address the needs of these children by removing barriers to successful transition of youth who are aging out of foster care and improving services, educate the public and professionals, and advocate for the rights of all children in out of home care. We are tremendously grateful for their support.

The Florida Bar Foundation’s Legal Assistance for the Poor and the Children’s Legal Services Grant allows Florida’s Children First to continue and expand it’s work. The Children’s Systemic Initiative (CSI) focuses on the legal rights and needs of Florida’s children who are at risk and/or in state systems of care, concentrating on those in the child welfare system. However, the CSI also will tackle the rights and needs of children who are disabled, mentally ill and those involved in the juvenile justice system. Systemic change is the most effective way to positively impact the lives of large numbers of children in care or at risk. Therefore, the CSI concentrates the vast majority of its efforts on systemic reforms at the statewide level, and also on the local level as needed.
